CHAPTER SEVEN

THAT WEEKEND, SOPHIE finally managed to get Connor on the phone. ‘I was beginning to think you were ignoring my calls,’ she said, rubbing at her swollen belly as the baby kicked frantically within her.

‘Have you had it?’ he asked abruptly.

It?

No Hello, Soph, how are you?

‘Our daughter? Not yet.’

She tried not to sound angry. They needed to keep this civil. She didn’t want her baby to pick up on the animosity that there was between the two of them. It wouldn’t be fair. Their daughter was not a bargaining chip, or an asset to be passed around in a war. But she hated the fact that he’d used the word it. As if their baby was just some random object and not a precious, much wanted child.

‘Then what do you want?’

‘Well, I was hoping we could talk about things.’

‘Like what?’

My God! Whatever did I see in this man? He used to be charming, right?

‘About the future. About what’s going to happen after the baby’s born.’

‘You mean money?’

‘No, I don’t mean money! Though I guess that will have to come into it sooner rather than later. I’m talking about when she’s born—about if you’ll want to see her and, if you do, what sort of contact you’d want.’

‘I hadn’t really thought about it.’

‘Really?’

She couldn’t believe this! Ever since they’d broken up, just over half a year ago, she’d thought of nothing else but this baby and she’d imagined—hoped—that beneath Connor’s selfish exterior there might lurk a streak of love or a sense of duty towards the baby that he’d helped create.

He knew her due date. He’d stuck around long enough to find that out. Surely his mind had been drifting more and more to what would happen when his child was born? Or did he truly not care? How could she have once thought that this man cared for her? Was her radar so far off? Had she been so desperate for love that she’d taken his confidence, his swagger, his apparent ardent desire for her, as something else?

‘It’s been a difficult time for me, Sophie.’

‘Difficult for you?’

‘You wouldn’t understand. I’ve had to make some huge adjustments since we broke up.’

‘Since you walked away, you mean?’

There was a silence. Then, ‘I’ll pay child support. I spoke to my boss and he gave me a small pay rise after that deal I brokered, so paying maintenance shouldn’t be a problem.’

‘And will you want to see her?’

Another long silence. One so long she almost thought that maybe he’d put the phone down and walked away. But then she heard him let out a sigh.

‘I don’t know...’

‘Well, you don’t have long to figure it out. She’s due in a couple of days, in case you’ve forgotten.’

‘Of course I haven’t!’

‘Haven’t you?’

Her anger seeped out. She couldn’t help it. She was frustrated. Where was the man she’d thought she was in love with? And did she really want her beautiful daughter spending time with a man like him? She’d be better off spending time with Theo.
